Rahmi Koç was born in 1930 in Ankara, into a family with a strong entrepreneurial spirit. His father, Vehbi Koç, founded one of Türkiye’s most influential conglomerates, Koç Holding, in 1926. Rahmi grew up witnessing the transformation of a small business into a national powerhouse, which shaped his own ambitions and values.

After completing his education at Robert College in Istanbul and later at Johns Hopkins University in the U.S., Rahmi joined the family business in 1958. He quickly became a driving force behind its expansion, focusing on diversification and modernization. Under his leadership, Koç Holding grew into a global player, with interests in automotive, energy, finance, and consumer goods. One of his most notable contributions was the establishment of Tofaş, a joint venture with Fiat, which became a cornerstone of Türkiye’s automotive industry.

Beyond business, Rahmi Koç was deeply committed to education and culture. He played a key role in founding Koç University in 1993, which has since become one of Türkiye’s leading institutions. He also supported the restoration of historical sites, including the Rahmi M. Koç Museum in Istanbul, which showcases the history of industry, transportation, and communication.

Rahmi Koç’s leadership extended beyond the boardroom. He was known for his hands-on approach, often visiting factories and engaging with employees at all levels. His dedication to innovation and quality earned him respect both in Türkiye and internationally. Even after stepping down from active management, his influence remained strong, as Koç Holding continued to thrive under his guidance.

Today, his legacy lives on through the businesses he helped build and the institutions he supported. His story is a testament to the power of vision, hard work, and a deep sense of responsibility toward society.
