Rıfat Ilgaz (1911–1993) remains one of Türkiye’s most beloved writers, known for his sharp wit, social commentary, and deep empathy for the struggles of ordinary people. Born in Cide, Kastamonu, Ilgaz grew up in poverty, an experience that shaped his writing and gave his words authenticity and warmth.

After completing his education in Istanbul, Ilgaz worked as a teacher while secretly writing poetry and stories that reflected the hardships of workers, students, and the marginalized. His most famous work, Hababam Sınıfı (The Chaos Class), a satirical novel about a group of mischievous students, became a cultural phenomenon.
