Cahit Arf (1910–1997) was one of Türkiye’s most influential mathematicians, known for his groundbreaking work in algebra and number theory. Born in Thessaloniki (then part of the Ottoman Empire), Arf’s family later moved to Istanbul, where his passion for mathematics began to flourish. He studied at the prestigious Galatasaray High School before pursuing higher education in France, earning his doctorate from the University of Strasbourg in 1938.

Arf’s most notable contribution is the Arf invariant, a concept in quadratic forms that became a cornerstone in algebraic topology and theoretical physics. His work earned him international recognition, and the term "Arf invariant" is still used in advanced mathematical research today. In 1943, he returned to Türkiye, where he became a professor at Istanbul University and later at the Middle East Technical University (METU). His teachings inspired generations of mathematicians in Türkiye and beyond.

Beyond academia, Arf was a humble and dedicated educator. He believed in making mathematics accessible to all, often simplifying complex ideas for his students. His legacy extends beyond his publications—many of Türkiye’s leading scientists credit him as a mentor and role model. In 1994, he was honored with the TÜBİTAK Science Award, one of Türkiye’s highest scientific accolades.

Today, the Arf Theorem and the Arf Rings remain fundamental in mathematical research. His name is also immortalized on the 10 Turkish Lira banknote, a tribute to his enduring impact on science and education in Türkiye. 🇹🇷📚
