Refet Bele (1877–1963) was a prominent Turkish military officer and statesman who played a significant role in the Turkish War of Independence (1919–1923). Born in Istanbul, he graduated from the Ottoman Military Academy and quickly rose through the ranks, serving in various conflicts, including the Balkan Wars (1912–1913) and World War I (1914–1918).
After the Ottoman Empire’s defeat in World War I, Bele joined Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in the resistance against Allied occupation. He was a key commander in the Battle of Sakarya (1921), one of the most critical engagements of the war, where Turkish forces secured a decisive victory.
