Ottoman Heritage Hilltop Alanya

Tucked away in the heart of Alanya, the tomb of Sitti Zeyneb is a small yet meaningful historical site. Dating back to the Ottoman period, this modest structure is believed to honor a respected woman from the era, though details about her life remain scarce. The tomb’s simple architecture reflects the traditional Ottoman style, with whitewashed walls and a dome that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.

The site is located near the Alanya Castle, offering visitors a chance to combine history with scenic views. While not as grand as other landmarks in the region, Sitti Zeyneb’s Tomb holds a quiet charm, often visited by those interested in lesser-known stories of the past. The area around the tomb is peaceful, making it a pleasant spot for reflection or a short break during a day of exploring.

Sitti Zeynep Tomb belongs to the Sitti Zeyneb Binti Zeynelabidin Zawiya Foundation and is known to have been built in the 16th century, has been repaired and covered with lead. Located among the most important cultural heritage sites of Alanya Castle, the tomb of Sitti Zeynep, the daughter of Zeynelabidin, one of the sons of Hussein (the grandson of Prophet Muhammad), is visited as a mausoleum today. Alanya Ex-Mayor Adem Murat Yücel said, “The Sitti Zeyneb Mausoleum is not only an important cultural heritage but also a valuable spiritual asset. Built in the 16th century during the Ottoman period and mentioned in the famous traveler Evliya Çelebi's 'Seyahatname' (Book of Travels), we repaired the roof of the mausoleum following the approval of the Regional Directorate of Foundations and the decision of the Antalya Regional Board for the Protection of Cultural Heritage dated November 29, 2022, and numbered 14837. Sitti Zeyneb, the daughter of Zeynelabidin Hazretleri, is buried in the mausoleum. The structure, consisting of four sections, includes the mausoleum, mosque, zawiya (religious retreat), and hermitage. The mausoleum is open to the public between 09:00 and 19:00.”

Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for a tranquil spot away from the bustling tourist areas, Sitti Zeyneb’s Tomb is worth a visit. It’s a reminder of the many stories that shape Alanya’s cultural tapestry.
