Bodrum Windmills and Water Cisterns

One of the many sights overlooking Bodrum are the windmills. Facing northwest, to catch the coastal winds, the towers, made of stone and lined with wooden planks, were used from the mid 18th century until the 70s as a means to grind flour for the townspeople.
Although a common sight the towers are now derelict but still rest among the olive trees on the surrounding hills.
The ruins of three windmills can be seen at Yalikavak and another one has been reconstructed on the waterfront.

All over the Bodrum peninsula water cisterns can be seen. These white dome-shaped cisterns (Kümbet) were built by the rich during the Ottoman period using field stones. These cisterns were used to gather winter rainwater to use on their fields and give to livestock in summer.
Most of these have now fallen into disrepair but a few still contain some rather muddy water!
