This ancient Psidian city, now in ruins, lies 1,000 metres up in the Taurus Mountains about 35 kilometres inland from Antalya. Termessos is within the Güllük National Park with spectacular mountain scenery, flora and fauna, and remoteness among its many attractions.

The exact foundation date of the city is not known but it is likely to have been as early as 8thC BC. Most of its known history dates from the time of Alexander the Great, who, in 333 BC, had already conquered Perge and Aspendos before surrounding Termessos. He likened it to an eagle’s nest and never managed to conquer it.

This is a wonderful place to explore but be warned there are no little stalls selling drinks, so have your own supplies with you. Also stout footwear is essential as you have to explore the area on foot. This involves strenuous walking uphill and clambering over ruins to gain access to many of the sites!

Having said that however, Termessos, it is argued, is the most beautifully sited ruined city in Turkey. The mountain backdrop and views are stunning.

The many ruins that you can explore include a well-preserved Hellenistic theatre, constructed in the Greek style with seating for about 4,000 spectators.

To enjoy this amazing site to the full, you should allow at least two to three hours. The views are amazing and the area completely undeveloped.
It is also worth visiting the National Park.
